Hard water is water that contains a high concentration of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. Kansas City has one of the hardest water in the nation, according to a 2025 survey. https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article308560935.html

These minerals enter the water as it passes through rock formations like limestone and chalk. While not a health hazard, hard water can cause various inconveniences and aesthetic issues.

Here's are some hard water facts;

  • Hard water forms naturally as water percolates through the ground, dissolving minerals from rocks like limestone, chalk, and gypsum.

  • The most common minerals in hard water are calcium and magnesium carbonates, bicarbonates, and sulfates.

  • Hard water makes it difficult for soap and detergents to lather, leaving behind soap scum and residue. This can make proper cleaning of your home and clothing difficult.

  • Mineral buildup can clog pipes, reduce water flow, and damage appliances like water heaters and washing machines.

  • Hard water can cause cloudy glassware, scale buildup on fixtures, and dry skin and hair.

  • While hard water isn't considered a health risk, it may contribute to dry skin and hair. Some studies suggest potential benefits like increased bone mineral density and reduced cardiovascular disease mortality, but these findings are not conclusive.

  • You can test your water hardness using a water testing kit or by looking for signs like soap scum, scale buildup, or cloudy glassware.

  • Water softeners can be used to reduce the mineral content of hard water, often by replacing calcium and magnesium with sodium or potassium.

  • Having a professional company, like Victory Mechanical, clean and/or replace your water heater can improve the impacts of the hard water in the Kansas City area.
